Stolen Sheep 18/01/2012

Police are investigating the loss of 12 Llyeyn sheep from a field close to the junction of the B6260 (Appleby to Orton road). The sheep are white faced and went missing over the last six weeks. if you believe you may be able to help police with their enquiries, or believe the sheep may have strayed into your flock please call the non emergency police number 101 and leave a message for PC 7557 Rob Ewin. Farmers in the area should also be on the look out for suspicious vehicles and count their stock on a regular basis during the lambing and breeding period.

Theft of Heating Fuel 11/01/2012

There can be an increase in theft of heating or diesel oil at this time of year due to the price of crude oil. This can cause an increase of fuel thefts. Remember to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity including registration numbers of suspicious vehicles to the Police on 101 or 999 if a crime is in progress.

Please take a few mintues to read the following precautions to help protect your fuel.

Location of your tank:
When sighting a fuel tank, please locate out of the sight of the main road and in view of your house. Ensure that the tank is within a reasonable distance to the road, otherwise the fuel company may struggle to refill it.

Securing your oil tank:
Secure your tank with a wooden or metal fence, trellis or wall or for further security a lockable metal grill or cage can be added. The wall or fence should be as close to the tank and as high as possible. Consideration can also be given for chemically “tagging” the fuel.

Control Switches:
When the tank is not in use, the control switches that control the flow of fuel should be switched off and the electricity supply isolated.

Padlocks:
Invest in a good quality padlock, the closed shackle variety are the best as they have a very little of the small shackle exposed and therefore bolt croppers cannot get a good grip.

Oil Level Gauges:
Remote electronic oil guages set off an audible alarm when the oil level suddenly drops or falls between a quarter of a tank. These guages can be placed in the kitchen or utitlity to warn of a potential problem. Remember to check oil levels regularly, this will help to monitor usage and check none has gone missing.

Security Lights:
Consider installing security lights, low energy ‘dusk til’ dawn’ lights positioned close to the tank should in most cases provide sufficient light to illuminate any suspicious activity. High powered lights can also be used but make sure they are not a nuisance to neighbours or road users.

Closed Circuit Television (CCTV):
You could consider installing CCTV. For advice on this please contact your local Crime Prevention Officer on 101

Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service are hosting HeartStart Instructor Training courses

Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service are hosting some HeartStart Instructor Training courses (delivered by North West Ambulance Service) as follows:

Monday 16th January @ Barrow Fire Station (9.30am – 4pm)
or
Tuesday 24th January @ Fire Service Headquarters (9.30am – 4pm)

The course covers :

- Contacting the emergency services
- Putting a casualty into the recovery position
- Dealing with a suspected heart attack
- Suggestions of what to do when somebody is choking
- Dealing with a casualty who is bleeding
- Performing CPR

Alternatively, if you would prefer us to deliver a 2 x hour course for a group in your area, please let me know and we can arrange this for you.

Training & courses are delivered for FREE and certificates of attendance awarded.

Beware bracelets made from poisonous red and black Jequirity bean 06/01/2012

Residents in Cumbria are warned about bracelets which are made from the poisonous red and black Jequirity bean, the deadly seed of the plantabrus precatorious. The seed contains the toxin abrin, a contolled substance under the Terrorism Act which if swallowed can kill in doses of just 3 micrograms. Abrin is chemically similar to ricin, a chemical warefare agent. People who have bought the bracelets are being urged to bag them and then wash their hands and avoid touching their eyes. The bracelets have been sold through 36 retailers, one of which is the Eden Project in Cornwall.If you require any advice please contact Trading Standards via Consumer Direct on 08454 040506.

Jim GREY has been reported missing. He was last seen at approximately 09:50 on 04/01/2012 in THE WHITE LION PUBLIC HOUSE PATTERDALE. MR GREY is a 47 year old white male and is described as 6 2 ft of medium build with short greying dark hair shaggy on top and is clean shaven. He was last seen wearing blue waterproofs and carrying walking equipment. MR GREY stated to owners of the WHITE LION PUB that he was planning to take the bus to AIRA Force and walk THE DODDS. Please check any out houses for this male and report any information or sightings to CUMBRIA POLICE on 101.

2012 will be an exciting year for Britain with our hosting of the Olympic Games. For our County that means we can expect an increase in visitor numbers and we hope that they will enjoy Cumbrian hospitality and exploration of our fantastic natural and cultural heritage.

On behalf of you all, we extend our thanks to our law enforcement and emergency services, who have served us very well again in 2011.

We hope that our numbers continue to swell and that our new Cumbria Community Messaging System helps us stay informed and promotes public safety.
